History of Chums, Incorporated
Chums, Incorporated began as a close friendship between three women in Norfolk, Virginia: Mary Ward Barnes, Joyce Tate Brown, and Theodora Jackson Cora. On a cold, rainy night in February 1946, the three friends sat in Barnes' red Thunderbird convertible, contemplating how to spend their evening. World War II had recently ended, but their boyfriends, who were still serving in the military, had not yet returned home. Amidst the ongoing segregation of the era, they decided to create a social club to strengthen their bond, naming it "Chums" as a symbol of their enduring friendship.
The three women had first become friends during their college years at Virginia State University in Petersburg, Virginia. Although Chums initially functioned as a local social club, it soon expanded its focus to include social, civic, and cultural enrichment within their communities. In 1952, the organization was officially incorporated as Chums, Inc., marking the beginning of its broader mission.
Evolution and Purpose
Over the decades, Chums, Inc. has committed itself to fostering social, civic, and cultural growth in the communities it serves. The organization's national theme, "Listen to the Children... enrich their lives," guides each chapter in identifying and addressing local needs. Chums’ members dedicate their time and resources to fundraising efforts, scholarships, and volunteer initiatives aimed at improving the lives of children and the community.
Symbolism and Values
While the name "Chums" is not an acronym, each letter has been attributed values that reflect the organization's guiding principles:
C - Character and charm we strive to attain.
H - Honesty and humility are always our aim.
U - Understanding and unselfishness we exhibit each day.
M - Modesty and moderation light our pathway.
The yellow tea rose, the official flower of Chums, Inc., symbolizes "brightness" (yellow) and "awakening" (green), representing the organization's commitment to improving children's lives. The motto, "A good archer is not known by his arrow but by his aim," encapsulates the organization's focus on intent and purpose. This philosophy is visually represented in the Chums logo, which features a handshake symbol of fellowship within a shield, surrounded by a sunburst.
Organizational Structure and Activities
Each local chapter of Chums, Inc. creates its own calendar of activities tailored to the specific needs of its community. However, all chapters unite annually to celebrate Founders Day in February and attend the annual conclave on the third weekend of October. During this conclave, the board of directors- comprising national officers and chapter Presidents -conducts its annual meeting. National officers are elected every two years to ensure the organization remains dynamic while staying true to its founding principles.
